There’s a particular feeling to October nights in Lancashire.

Cold air creeping under your sleeves.
Wet leaves plastered to pavements.
The smell of bonfires somewhere in the distance.
That strange golden-orange glow streetlights get when the mist rolls in properly.

And above all of it, the Hunter’s Moon.

Bright.
Sharp.
Watching everything.

I’ve always thought the Hunter’s Moon feels less soft than some of the other Full Moons. Less dreamy. Less emotional. This moon has practical energy. Protective energy.

It’s the moon equivalent of checking the locks before bed and making sure everybody’s home safe.

The Hunter’s Moon traditionally arrives after the Harvest Moon, usually in October, when the work of gathering food for winter was already underway. Historically, this was the season where people prepared properly for the colder months ahead.

Food stored.
Wood stacked.
Animals brought closer in.
Homes secured against winter weather.

There’s survival energy in this moon.

Not fear.
Preparation.

And honestly, I think modern witches still feel that instinct somewhere deep down, even if our version now looks more like buying extra tea bags and panic-ordering thermal socks after the first frost.

Spiritually, the Hunter’s Moon is brilliant for protection work, boundary-setting, clearing out stagnant energy, and letting go of things you do not want to drag into winter with you.

Because winter magnifies things, doesn’t it?

The cosy stuff becomes cosier.
The heavy stuff becomes heavier.

The Hunter’s Moon arrives almost like a checkpoint before the darker half of the year fully settles in.

It asks:
“What needs protecting?”
“What needs strengthening?”
“What absolutely needs leaving behind?”

Not in a dramatic “burn your whole life down” sort of way either.

More in a:
“Right then. Enough of this nonsense now.”
kind of way.

I always notice the Hunter’s Moon energy physically first.

Suddenly I want:

  • thicker blankets
  • warm food
  • candles everywhere
  • the house feeling cleaner
  • fewer people irritating me unnecessarily

Honestly, it’s peak boundary-setting season.

And there’s magic in that instinct.

Animals prepare for winter.
Plants die back.
The land itself starts conserving energy.

We’re allowed to do the same.

One of my favourite things to do during the Hunter’s Moon is a proper home cleanse.

Not influencer cleaning.
Not aesthetic organising in matching beige containers.

Real witch cleaning.

Windows cracked open despite the cold.
Floors swept properly.
Old clutter finally dealt with.
Rosemary simmering on the stove.
Salt at the thresholds.

The sort of cleaning where the whole house feels lighter afterwards.

There’s old folk magic in those actions too. People have spiritually protected homes for centuries through practical acts. Hanging herbs. Sweeping negativity out the door. Burning protective plants on the hearth.

The Hunter’s Moon feels deeply connected to that kind of grounded protection work.

Rosemary is one of my favourite herbs for this moon phase.

No surprise there honestly because I’ll find an excuse to use rosemary for practically everything.

But it suits the Hunter’s Moon beautifully.

Protection.
Strength.
Clarity.
Warding.

I often burn a little rosemary during this moon while quietly walking through the house, especially near doors and windows.

Nothing elaborate.

Just:
“This home is protected.
Only peace may stay here.”

Simple words carry power when repeated with intention.

The Hunter’s Moon is also excellent for release work.

By October, most of us are carrying things we no longer need.

Stress from summer chaos.
Old resentment.
Exhaustion.
Habits that are quietly draining us.
People who only ever seem to arrive carrying problems and leave carrying your bloody energy with them.

This moon has a wonderful:
“We’re not taking that into winter.”
sort of energy.

And honestly? Good.

One simple ritual I love during the Hunter’s Moon involves nothing more complicated than paper, fire, and honesty.

Light a black or white candle.
Write down what you’re done carrying.
Not what sounds spiritual.
What’s actually exhausting you.

Then burn the paper safely and watch the smoke rise.

Not because the moon magically fixes everything overnight.

But because sometimes the act of saying:
“No more. I’m finished with this now.”
matters deeply.

The Hunter’s Moon supports that kind of release beautifully.

This is also the perfect moon for strengthening boundaries.

October energy naturally turns inward anyway. People spend more time at home. Nights grow longer. We become more protective of our space and energy.

The Hunter’s Moon amplifies that instinct.

You might notice yourself:

  • craving quiet
  • pulling back socially
  • wanting stronger emotional boundaries
  • becoming less tolerant of draining situations

That isn’t failure.
That’s seasonal wisdom.

Even nature knows when to conserve energy.

I also think this moon carries a lot of ancestral feeling.

There’s something ancient about standing outside beneath a bright October moon while cold air bites at your face. You can almost imagine generations before us doing exactly the same thing:
checking weather,
protecting homes,
preparing for winter,
hoping they had enough to get through.

The Hunter’s Moon reminds us that protection magic has always existed.

Sometimes it looked like herbs above a doorway.
Sometimes it looked like soup simmering on the stove.
Sometimes it looked like simply keeping the fire going for the people you love.

Still magic.
Always magic.

And honestly, I think that’s why this moon feels so powerful.

Not because it’s flashy.

Because it’s practical.

The Hunter’s Moon asks us to become guardians of our own peace.

To protect our homes.
Our energy.
Our rest.
Our people.

To stop leaving doors open for things that only come inside to drain us.

So if you feel yourself pulling inward during this moon…
wanting warmth, safety, comfort and clearer boundaries…

listen to that instinct.

Light the candle.
Sweep the floors.
Burn the rosemary.
Lock the doors against what no longer belongs with you.

Winter is coming.

And you deserve to enter it protected.
