Table of Contents

The Last Quarter Moon always feels a bit like opening the windows after a long week.

Not glamorous.
Not dramatic.
Just necessary.

It arrives after the intensity of the Full Moon has passed, when everything starts quietening down again. The sky still holds light, but less of it now. The energy shifts. Things feel slower. More reflective.

This is the moon phase where a lot of us suddenly feel the urge to clear things out.

Cupboards.
Emails.
Old habits.
Relationships hanging on by a thread and sheer social obligation.
That weird drawer full of dead batteries and tangled charger cables we all apparently own for some reason.

The Last Quarter Moon carries that energy naturally.

Release.
Closure.
Space-making.

Not punishment.
Not failure.

Just clearing the path a bit.

I think modern life makes it very hard for people to let things end naturally.

We’re constantly encouraged to hold on. Push through. Keep going. Stay productive. Persist at all costs like exhausted Victorian mill workers powered entirely by anxiety and caffeine.

But the moon doesn’t work like that.

Nothing in nature grows constantly.

Trees lose leaves.
Gardens die back.
Animals rest.
The moon itself shrinks away into darkness every single month before beginning again.

The Last Quarter Moon reminds us that release is part of growth, not the opposite of it.

And honestly? Some things need putting down.

This phase sits between the Full Moon and the final Waning Crescent. Energetically, it’s a time for taking stock.

What’s actually working?
What’s draining you?
What feels heavy now?
What have you outgrown?

The answers are not always dramatic either.

Sometimes the thing you need to release is huge.

Sometimes it’s just:

  • doomscrolling until 1am
  • saying yes when you mean no
  • clothes that make you feel like a disgruntled baked potato
  • carrying guilt that was never yours in the first place

The Last Quarter Moon has very practical energy.

It likes honesty.
It likes clarity.
It likes clearing out the spiritual equivalent of junk drawers.

I often notice this moon phase physically before I notice it emotionally.

Suddenly I want to clean everything.

Not in a joyful influencer way where somebody’s delicately wiping already spotless worktops while acoustic music plays in the background.

I mean proper practical witch cleaning.

Opening windows.
Changing bedding.
Sweeping floors.
Getting rid of things that have been irritating me for weeks.

There’s old folk magic in that sort of work too.

People sometimes forget that cleansing rituals did not begin on social media. Our ancestors were spiritually clearing homes every time they scrubbed a doorstep, aired blankets, burned rosemary on the fire or swept dirt out through the back door.

The Last Quarter Moon is brilliant for that kind of grounded magic.

One of my favourite rituals during this phase is painfully simple.

I light a black or white candle, put some music on quietly, and clean one area of the house properly.

That’s it.

As I clear things away, I think about what else I’m ready to release emotionally too.

Stress.
Resentment.
Fear.
Mental clutter.

The physical act helps somehow.

There’s something deeply satisfying about wiping down surfaces while internally deciding:
“Right then. We’re not carrying this nonsense into next month.”

The Last Quarter Moon is also excellent for boundary work.

This phase has a very:
“Actually no, that’s enough now”
sort of energy.

Which is deeply needed sometimes.

Not every spell has to be about attracting things. Some magic is about protecting your peace. Closing doors. Ending cycles that are draining the life out of you.

Honestly, boundary magic gets more powerful with age.

In your twenties you want manifestation.
In your forties you’re casting spells for uninterrupted naps and fewer emotionally exhausting people.

Growth.

Bath rituals work beautifully during this moon phase too, especially if you’ve been carrying stress or emotional heaviness.

Nothing complicated.

Salt.
Rosemary.
Lavender.
Hot water.

Maybe a candle if the cat isn’t currently trying to set its tail on fire near it.

As you soak, imagine old energy loosening its grip. Not violently. Just naturally washing away.

That’s the thing about the Last Quarter Moon.

Its energy isn’t aggressive.

It’s calm release.

Like autumn leaves finally letting go of branches because the season has changed.

I also think this moon teaches us something important about endings.

Not every ending is tragic.

Some endings are relief.

Some are overdue.
Some create space for better things.
Some simply mean you’ve grown beyond where you used to be.

The Last Quarter Moon understands that deeply.

It reminds us that making space is sacred work too.

And honestly, sometimes the most magical thing you can do during this phase is rest.

Not endlessly analysing your life.
Not forcing closure.
Not performing elaborate release ceremonies involving seventeen herbs and a handwritten letter to the universe.

Just resting.

Switching your brain off for a bit.
Going to bed earlier.
Letting yourself recover.

The moon is literally shrinking back into darkness during this phase. It is not trying to peak constantly.

Neither should we.

So if you feel quieter during the Last Quarter Moon…
more reflective…
more tired…
more aware of what no longer fits your life…

that’s normal.

The cycle is doing what cycles do.

Open the windows.
Sweep the floors.
Take the bath.
Let something go.

You are allowed to release things that have become too heavy to carry.

That is not weakness.

That is wisdom.
