The First Quarter Moon always feels a bit stubborn to me.
Not dramatic like the Full Moon.
Not dreamy and hopeful like the New Moon.
This is the moon phase that turns up, rolls its sleeves up, and says:
“Right then. What are we actually doing about it?”
And honestly? Sometimes that’s exactly the energy we need.
The First Quarter Moon appears when the moon is half illuminated, halfway between the New Moon and the Full Moon. It arrives during the part of the lunar cycle where momentum starts building properly. Intentions planted during the New Moon suddenly begin meeting reality.
Which is usually where things get awkward.
Because this is often the phase where doubts creep in, motivation dips, obstacles appear, and you start wondering whether becoming a mysterious bog witch living alone with twelve cats might honestly be easier than dealing with people.
Classic First Quarter Moon energy.
For witches, this phase is deeply connected to courage, persistence, action, boundaries, resilience, and commitment. This is the moon phase that asks whether you still want the thing you said you wanted when the New Moon made everything feel exciting and full of possibility.
And sometimes the answer changes.
Which is completely fine.
But if the answer is still yes, this moon helps you keep going even when things feel difficult, slow, or frustrating.
I think one of the reasons I love the First Quarter Moon so much is because it feels incredibly human.
The Full Moon gets all the glamour and dramatic emotional moments. The New Moon gets all the fresh-start optimism. Meanwhile the First Quarter Moon is standing there holding your coat while muttering:
“Alright then. Time to actually follow through.”
Which, honestly, is where most real magic happens.
Not in aesthetic altar photos.
Not in buying seventeen candles you absolutely did not need.
In consistency.
In carrying on.
In trying again.
In refusing to completely abandon your goals because you had one rough week and cried over a mildly stressful email.
That sort of persistence is deeply magical.
This moon phase is brilliant for courage work.
Not fake “nothing scares me” confidence. Proper courage. The kind that exists alongside fear.
The courage to set boundaries.
The courage to continue.
The courage to admit something isn’t working.
The courage to protect your energy.
The courage to begin before you feel ready.
That sort of strength matters far more than pretending you’ve got your entire life sorted out under the moonlight while internally running on caffeine and pure panic.
One thing I’ve noticed about the First Quarter Moon is that it highlights resistance.
Suddenly you become painfully aware of:
- distractions
- procrastination
- emotional blocks
- habits that aren’t helping
- situations draining your energy
- all the nonsense you keep tolerating for absolutely no good reason
Which can feel irritating at first.
But awareness is useful.
You can’t shift something if you refuse to look directly at it.
The First Quarter Moon shines a light on the places where growth requires action rather than just intention.
This moon also carries strong boundary-setting energy.
Because persistence does not mean grinding yourself into dust trying to prove you’re strong enough.
Sometimes persistence means resting properly.
Sometimes it means saying no.
Sometimes it means protecting your peace instead of handing it out freely to every energy vampire with a sad backstory and poor communication skills.
That’s strength too.
Possibly the most grown-up kind honestly.
One of my favourite simple First Quarter Moon rituals involves nothing more complicated than a candle, a notebook, and ten quiet minutes where nobody bloody talks to me.
I’ll light a candle, usually red, orange, or gold, and ask myself:
- What am I actually working toward?
- What’s getting in my way?
- What needs adjusting?
- What’s the next step?
Not the entire five-year plan.
Just the next step.
That question alone can make overwhelming situations feel manageable again.
Herbs linked to courage and resilience work beautifully during this phase too. Rosemary is excellent for clarity and determination. Thyme has long been associated with bravery in old folk traditions. Ginger adds movement and confidence when your energy’s feeling sluggish and miserable.
Even a cup of tea made intentionally can become part of the ritual.
That’s the beauty of everyday witchcraft.
Magic belongs in ordinary life.
Not just during elaborate rituals when the moon is perfectly positioned and your house is suspiciously tidy.
The First Quarter Moon also reminds us that progress is rarely graceful.
Sometimes growth looks impressive and cinematic.
Other times it looks like:
- surviving the week
- replying to difficult messages
- getting out of bed despite anxiety
- trying again after setbacks
- refusing to quit something important
- feeding yourself properly instead of surviving entirely on toast and vibes
That still counts.
Honestly, those moments probably count the most.
And if this phase feels emotionally frustrating sometimes?
That’s normal too.
The First Quarter Moon naturally carries tension because it sits between intention and manifestation. Between dreaming and doing.
Seeds literally split apart before they grow.
The First Quarter Moon carries that same uncomfortable, necessary energy.
Growth often asks something from us.
Patience.
Effort.
Honesty.
Persistence.
Not perfection.
The beauty of First Quarter Moon magic is that it does not expect you to have everything figured out.
It simply asks:
“Will you keep going?”
Quietly.
Steadily.
One small step at a time.
And honestly?
That’s where some of the strongest magic lives.
