Yule

Introduction

This gently spiced slow cooker cider is made for the longest night: warm, fragrant and easy to leave bubbling while everyone settles in. Use fresh apple cider or cloudy apple juice for an alcohol-free Yule drink, then add a splash of rum to individual mugs only if you fancy it.

Method

  1. Pour the apple cider or cloudy apple juice into your slow cooker.
  2. Add the orange slices and fresh ginger.
  3. Add the cinnamon sticks, cloves and any optional spices. Bundle the whole spices in muslin or cheesecloth first if you would like them easy to remove later.
  4. Cover and cook on LOW for 4 hours.
  5. Remove the whole spices, then serve in mugs with an orange slice or cinnamon stick if you like.

Swaps & Variations

Use cloudy apple juice for a fully alcohol-free version. Add a small splash of dark rum to individual mugs if wanted, rather than to the whole slow cooker. Star anise and nutmeg are lovely extras but not essential.
