Table of Contents
Liquorice root is one of those herbs that feels deceptively innocent.
You hear “liquorice” and your brain immediately goes:
- Pontefract cakes
- old sweet shops
- somebody’s nan carrying boiled sweets in her handbag
- traumatic childhood moments involving black jellybeans
But in witchcraft?
Liquorice root has a bit of a reputation.
This herb has long been associated with:
- influence
- persuasion
- attraction
- confidence
- personal power
- protection
Basically, if rosemary is the sensible protector herb and mugwort is the spooky moon witch, liquorice root is the charismatic bastard who can walk into a room and somehow convince everybody to help them move house.
Powerful energy honestly.
What Is Liquorice Root?
Liquorice root comes from the Glycyrrhiza glabra plant and has been used for centuries in:
- herbal medicine
- folk remedies
- spiritual practice
- love magic
- protection work
Liquorice has a long history of medicinal use as well as folk and magical use. Internal medicinal use needs more care than symbolic spellwork because liquorice can affect the body and interact with medicines.
But magically, liquorice root became associated with:
- commanding energy
- persuasive speech
- attraction
- influence
- confidence
Not necessarily in a sinister:
“I shall bend everyone to my will”
way either.
More:
“Please let me survive this meeting without dissolving into awkward goblin panic.”
Very relatable witchcraft honestly.
Magical Properties of Liquorice Root
Liquorice root is commonly used for:
- influence
- confidence
- love magic
- protection
- persuasion
- communication
- empowerment
Its energy feels:
- smooth
- clever
- magnetic
- steady
Like someone who knows exactly what they’re doing even when they absolutely do not.
Again.
Relatable.
Liquorice Root & Influence Magic
Historically, liquorice root has often been used in spells involving:
- influence
- negotiation
- authority
- communication
- confidence
Now.
Important note before TikTok gets involved and everybody loses their minds:
Ethical witchcraft matters.
This is not about controlling people like some low-budget fantasy villain waving cloves around in the kitchen yelling:
“YOU WILL OBEY ME.”
Calm down Gandalf.
Liquorice works best for:
- strengthening your voice
- helping you advocate for yourself
- boosting confidence
- supporting clear communication
- helping you hold your ground
Honestly a lot healthier than manipulative nonsense.
Liquorice Root for Confidence
This is one of my favourite uses for it.
Liquorice root is brilliant when you need:
- courage
- self-assurance
- backbone
- confidence under pressure
Particularly before:
- interviews
- difficult conversations
- meetings
- performances
- family gatherings where somebody’s aunt is definitely going to start drama by pudding.
Simple Confidence Charm
Add:
- liquorice root
- cinnamon
- rosemary
to a small pouch.
Hold it in your hands and focus on:
- confidence
- calm
- clear communication
Carry it with you when facing stressful situations.
Especially useful if you tend to rehearse arguments in the shower three hours after they happened.
Love Magic with Liquorice Root
Liquorice root is often associated with:
- attraction
- warmth
- emotional connection
- strengthening bonds
Its energy in love magic feels magnetic rather than obsessive.
Less:
“become hopelessly obsessed with me forever”
and more:
“let’s communicate properly and stop being emotionally constipated.”
Which frankly improves most relationships.
Simple Love Jar
Try combining:
- liquorice root
- rose petals
- cinnamon
- lavender
in a small jar for:
- warmth
- emotional connection
- attraction
- harmony
Perfect for:
- self-love work
- strengthening existing relationships
- confidence in dating
- attracting healthier connections
Not for forcing outcomes.
Because that’s creepy.
Protection Magic with Liquorice Root
People don’t always realise liquorice root also has protective qualities.
Especially around:
- psychic boundaries
- emotional resilience
- personal empowerment
It’s wonderful for people who struggle to:
- say no
- maintain boundaries
- stop absorbing everybody else’s nonsense like a spiritually exhausted tea towel.
Which is approximately 87% of witches honestly.

Working with Liquorice Root Safely
Quick sensible section because witches deserve functioning blood pressure:
- Liquorice root can interact with medications and health conditions.
- Liquorice can affect blood pressure and interact with medicines, so check with a pharmacist or other qualified healthcare professional before using it internally for medicinal purposes.
- Always research properly before using herbs medicinally.
- Essential oils should be diluted appropriately.
- And please do not start trying to “command” random people with herbs instead of learning communication skills like an adult.
Magic supports life.
It does not replace emotional maturity.
Annoying but true.
Final Thoughts
Liquorice root is one of those quietly powerful herbs that deserves far more attention in witchcraft.
It supports:
- confidence
- communication
- attraction
- empowerment
- emotional resilience
without needing elaborate rituals or dramatic aesthetics.
Sometimes the most effective magic is simply walking into a difficult situation grounded, clear-headed, and remembering you’re allowed to take up space.
Liquorice root helps with that.
And honestly?
In this economy, with these people, and this level of collective nonsense going on in the world, we could all use a bit more backbone magic.
