The Lancs Green Witch
Joy Spells for the Summer Witch
Joy is a slightly strange thing to make magic for.
Protection, prosperity, love, success, confidence. Those intentions are easy to understand. They have a destination. We want something to happen, change, arrive or leave.
Joy is softer.
It might be laughing in the garden with somebody you love. The first strawberry of summer. Music through an open window. A ridiculously late sunset. Bare feet on warm grass. Finding a bee asleep in a flower. Sitting outside with a cup of tea and realising nobody needs anything from you for ten whole minutes.
None of those things sounds particularly dramatic.
That’s rather the point.
Joy magic doesn’t have to manufacture constant happiness. It can simply help us notice, welcome and make space for the good things that are already trying to reach us.
And summer is a beautiful season for practising it.
What Is Joy Magic?
Joy magic is spellwork focused on pleasure, lightness, gratitude, celebration, connection and the ability to notice enjoyable moments.
That doesn’t mean pretending everything is wonderful.
It doesn’t mean ignoring grief, stress, anger, illness, money worries, difficult relationships or the approximately seventeen irritating things that happened before breakfast.
Forced positivity isn’t magic. It’s exhausting.
Joy magic can exist beside difficult things.
You can be worried and still enjoy the sun on your face.
You can be grieving and still laugh at something ridiculous.
You can have a difficult week and still be delighted that the first flower opened in the garden.
Joy doesn’t invalidate the harder parts of life.
Sometimes it gives us somewhere to rest between them.
Why Summer Works So Well for Joy Magic
Every season has its own forms of joy, but summer makes many of them unusually visible.
The days are long.
Gardens are active.
Food becomes colourful.
People spend more time outside.
There are flowers, insects, birds, fruit, warm evenings and opportunities to linger outdoors that simply aren’t available in the middle of a Lancashire January.
Summer also sits around the brightest part of the Wheel of the Year. Beltane moves us towards growth and vitality, Litha marks the height of the light, and Lammas begins the first harvest.
That makes summer a natural time to work with abundance, celebration and enjoyment.
Not because you are required to be happier in summer.
But because the season gives us plenty of material to work with.
Start With the Joy You Actually Want
Before building a spell, ask what joy means to you.
Not what it looks like on Pinterest.
Not what somebody else’s beautiful summer altar suggests it ought to be.
What genuinely makes you feel lighter?
Maybe it’s gardening.
Music.
Swimming.
Reading outside.
Cooking for people.
Going somewhere with your family.
Being completely alone for an afternoon.
Making things.
Walking in woodland.
Playing a game.
Watching terrible television with somebody who finds the same bits funny.
Joy magic works much better when the intention is connected to your real life.
A Simple Summer Joy Candle Spell
This is deliberately uncomplicated.
You’ll need a candle in a colour that feels joyful to you. Yellow, orange, pink, green or plain white are all perfectly good choices.
Place it safely on a stable, heat-resistant surface away from anything flammable.
Before lighting it, think of three things that have brought you genuine pleasure recently.
They don’t need to be important.
In fact, small is better.
The smell of rain on warm ground.
A message from somebody you love.
A really good biscuit.
Light the candle and say:
I make room for joy.
I notice what is good.
I welcome laughter, pleasure and lightness where they find me.
Sit with the flame for a few minutes and think about one thing you can actually do to create a little more enjoyment in the coming week.
Then extinguish the candle safely when you’re finished.
The practical action is part of the spell.
Magic is considerably more useful when we give it somewhere to land.
Make a Joy Jar
A joy jar is part spell, part ongoing record of good things.
Choose a jar, box, envelope or container you already have.
You can decorate it if that makes you happy, but you don’t need to turn it into an afternoon craft project unless you actually want an afternoon craft project.
Write small moments of joy on scraps of paper and add them as they happen.
First strawberry from the garden.
Crowley did something ridiculous.
Good conversation with a friend.
Finished something I was proud of.
Saw a fox.
Had coffee outside before work.
The intention isn’t to prove that your life is secretly perfect.
It’s to train your attention towards moments that are easy to lose amongst everything louder.
If you want to make the jar more deliberately magical, place a symbol of the sun beside it, tie a yellow ribbon around it or keep a small piece of citrine, sunstone or another personally joyful object nearby.
The expensive crystal is not compulsory.
The scraps of paper are doing most of the work.
A Flower Spell for Welcoming Joy
Flowers make wonderful summer spell ingredients because they embody something we often forget about joy.
Blooming doesn't last forever.
That doesn't make it pointless.
Choose a flower from your own garden if you have one available to spare, buy a single flower, or simply sit beside a living flower without picking it.
Notice it properly.
Colour.
Shape.
Scent.
The insects visiting it.
The fact that this particular flower exists now, at this particular point in the year.
Let it represent your willingness to enjoy something without needing to possess it forever.
You might say:
I welcome what is beautiful while it is here.
I do not need to hold joy still in order to receive it.
Then leave the flower growing if that's where you found it.
Not every spell ingredient needs to end up in a jar.
A Sunlight Spell
On a bright day, stand or sit somewhere you can feel sunlight safely and comfortably.
Close your eyes if that feels comfortable, or simply soften your gaze.
Feel the warmth on your skin.
Imagine the light reaching the parts of you that have felt tired, dull or disconnected.
You don't need to visualise anything complicated.
Just think:
There is warmth here.
There is light here.
I am allowed to enjoy this moment.
Stay for a few minutes, taking sensible care in strong sunlight.
Then go back to your day.
That's the whole spell.
Sometimes simple magic is powerful precisely because there is nothing to perform.
Herbs for Joy Magic
If you enjoy herbal magic, choose plants that fit the particular kind of joy you're working towards.
Calendula carries bright solar associations and can fit confidence, success and cheerful summer workings.
Chamomile is associated with calm, luck and prosperity, making it useful for softer, peaceful joy.
Lavender can support peace, love and a gentler kind of happiness.
Basil works beautifully where joy is connected to prosperity, success and a thriving home.
Rose suits love, friendship and self-worth.
Peppermint can bring a lively quality to workings around energy and clarity.
You don't need all of them.
Choose one or two that actually fit the intention.
If you're using dried ritual herbs, they can go into a sachet, spell jar or symbolic altar arrangement. Don't assume herbs sold for ritual use are suitable for drinking or eating. If you want edible summer magic, use ingredients specifically sold for food or tea use and check that they're suitable for you.
