A Ritual for Releasing What No Longer Serves
A symbolic release ritual for a relationship, memory, pattern or old role you are ready to stop feeding. The aim is freedom and clearer boundaries, not revenge.
Decide What Release Looks Like Afterwards
Decide what release looks like afterwards: no contact, muting social media, returning belongings, changing a routine, counselling or asking trusted people for support.
What You Need for a Safer Cord-Cutting Ritual
This version deliberately keeps cord and flame separate. You need only a short piece of cord, scissors and a clear boundary to follow afterwards.
• Short piece of cord, wool or string
• Scissors
• Paper and pen
• Optional black or white candle in a safe holder or LED candle
• Optional rosemary
Cord: the attachment being released.
Scissors: deliberate choice and separation.
Black: boundaries and banishing.
White: clarity and a clean beginning.
Rosemary: cleansing and protection.
Flame: transformation, kept separate from the cord.
Keep Flame, Cord and Paper Apart
Do not tie cord between candles, burn string or burn paper indoors. Synthetic fibres can melt or produce fumes and falling candles can start fires. If the attachment involves abuse, stalking or danger, prioritise safety planning and appropriate support.
Choose What You Are Ready to Put Down
Write what you are choosing to stop carrying, focused on yourself rather than controlling another person. Add one boundary or action that supports the release.
I acknowledge what this connection has meant. I am also allowed to stop carrying it.
Cut the Cord with Care
1. Place the cord in front of you.
2. Light one candle safely if using it, keeping cord and paper away from flame.
3. Read what you are releasing.
4. Hold one end of the cord in each hand and say the first words.
5. Put the cord down and cut it cleanly with scissors.
6. Separate the pieces and say the second words.
7. Read your practical boundary.
8. Say the final words and extinguish the candle.
9. Follow through on the boundary.
The cord is cut because I choose to stop feeding it. My attention, time and future belong to me.
I let this chapter end without needing revenge, permission or a dramatic sign from the universe.
Close the Ritual and Return to Yourself
Have water, eat something, make tea or speak to somebody safe. Focused release work can bring feelings up simply because you have spent time thinking about the situation.
Keep Choosing the Boundary
Feelings may return. That does not mean the cord reattached or the ritual failed. Repeat the practical boundary rather than endlessly repeating the spell.
Notice Where You Reclaim Your Attention
You may think about the situation less, maintain boundaries more easily or stop checking for updates. These changes can come from time, support and your own decisions too.
A Ritual Cannot Do the Releasing for You
A ritual cannot treat trauma, guarantee emotional recovery or make another person stop contacting you. Use mental-health, safeguarding, legal or emergency support where needed.
The Boundary Is the Part You Keep
The cut takes a second. The meaningful part comes afterwards: not reopening the old role or handing your attention back. The ritual marks the decision; your boundaries help you keep making it.
